February is the time of year when people start to give up on their New Year’s resolutions.

You probably know that I prefer writing intentions to setting resolutions or goals, but when it comes down to it, intentions, goals & resolutions all take action to implement.
Without action, there is no change, and your goals & intentions are meaningless.
Creating change in your life is not always easy though. Our brains love stability and security, which means that we are hardwired to avoid change. But that doesn’t mean that change is impossible or that you should avoid trying!
If you’re struggling to take action on your goals and intentions, I’ve put together 10 tips to help you stay motivated.
Start with the right goals
It’s so important that your goals and intentions are meaningful to you and aligned to what you truly want. If you’re trying to do something because you feel like you should, or out of obligation, you will always lose motivation.
Try this 2-step process to set goals or intentions that come from your own personal values and desires.
Simplify & focus
If you really want to change or accomplish something specific, you need to put a good amount of energy into it. This means making space for that goal or intention, and letting go of something else in your life that is not a priority. We have limited energy & focus, so stop trying to do everything and focus on what’s truly important to you!

Get clear on why
Check in with yourself and ask yourself, why is this goal is so important to me? What result am I hoping for? What will this goal allow me to do? How will it make me feel? By getting crystal clear on the purpose and results of your goals, you’ll feel a lot more motivated to work towards them.
Break it into chunks
When a goal is too big or too far away, it can be hard to find the motivation to work towards it, knowing that you won’t achieve it or see those results for a very long time! Instead, break your goals down into chunks: What step can I take today or this week? How will I know when I’ve completed that first step? Celebrate each step, and then plan out the next one!
Focus on what you want
Often our resolutions or goals come from situations or circumstances that we don’t want. For example, you might be feeling tired or stressed out, which leads to a goal around self-care or working less. This is totally normal!
Understanding what we don’t want is what gives us the most clarity around what we do want. However, once you have that understanding, you need to focus your attention & intention on where you want to go, not what you’re leaving behind. Paint a clear picture in your mind of what you want instead of what you’re trying to let go. Affirmations are a great tool to help you focus on what you want to achieve. This brings me to visualization…Once you have that clear vision of what you do want, take some time to visualize success. Imagine yourself taking the action you desire, or achieving that goal.
If you’re new to visualization, you can try this simple exercise. Visualizing success is super motivating because it makes your goals feel real and attainable.
Create a routine
One way to work on your goals without needing as much motivation overall is to incorporate your actions into your daily routine. It’s especially effective to pair a new action with an existing action. For example, if you’re trying to remember to drink more water in the morning, you could set out a glass beside your coffee pot before you go to bed. This way, when you wake up and go to make coffee, you’ll notice your glass and pour yourself some water to drink while your coffee brews!
Expecting overnight change is just not realistic. We all know it, yet we beat ourselves up whenever we make a mistake or fall short of our vision. Remember that you are doing the best you can in your current situation and that is always good enough! Progress is always better than perfection. Be proud of yourself for setting new goals and intentions and taking action in the first place.
Ask for help
Why is it so tough to ask for help? In fact, often when it comes to the things that matter the most to us, we feel that we have to do them all by ourselves. But, this isn’t true. There are people in your life who care about you and want to help! Don’t be shy! Ask yourself, what do I need to succeed right now? Who could help make it easier for me? A little help will get you back on track and motivated again.
Embrace the process
This might be the most important point of them all. Working towards our goals is amazing, but that doesn’t mean that we should wait until we’ve achieved them to enjoy our lives! Take time to appreciate where you are right now. Loving your life is one of the biggest motivators to keep on improving and moving forward! Remember to have fun and embrace life’s ups & downs when you can!

Finally, I do want to mention that it’s perfectly OK to just take it easy from time to time! Give yourself space to breathe and relax.
Life isn’t about always striding towards some imaginary finish line that you created for yourself.
It’s about small changes, intentional actions, that add up to big transformation. It’s about exploring & experiencing everything your life has to offer!
